The HBCU Community Challenge reflects the Ford century-long commitment supporting the African American community, and its education focus. Ford Fund invests more than $8 million a year—about one third of its annual financial support—in scholarships and additional educational initiatives. The 2016 winner is Prairie View A&M University with Hampton University and Johnson C. Smith University rounding out the top three.
Prairie View A&M University chemical engineering students Fred Okafor, Jonathan Orozco, Mustafa Saleem, Kale Schuetzeberg won a 75k grant for their proposal. They aim to creation a multi-energy conservation system that will monitor household water, electricity and gas consumption in real-time with the aim of reducing usage costs.
